Erosion protection matting – The coir geotextiles mat has optimal strength to hold the soil for a long period of time. The coir geotextile net is an eco-friendly product to control soil erosion. Soil erosion tends to occur due to heavy water flow or due to wind when the land has no vegetation. It is very suitable for reclamation of former mines, or beaches, strengthening cliffs, preventing erosion, strengthening soil, strengthening paths along railroads, strengthening road cliffs or bridges, and also as a growing medium for plants.
Coir geotextiles mat is becoming popular as a growing medium, but it’s important to understand its limitations and advantages before making the switch, says Julie P. Newman, agricultural advisor at the University of California Cooperative Extension. Some of the advantages include high water retention, a hollow texture allowing for better air circulation, and an acceptable pH level.
The Advantages of Erosion Protection Matting Coir Geotextiles
Coir geotextiles mat easily absorb water so that no watering is needed. Due to its high lignin content, coconut coir geotextiles decompose slowly which keeps the structure of the medium open. This allows air to penetrate better, encouraging bigger and healthier roots. Coir geotextiles mat usually decomposes in two to four years.
The pH of the coir geotextiles mat most commonly found in the market ranges from 5.8 to 6.5. Liming or adding lime is no longer necessary. Coir geotextiles mat is easily degraded or decomposed by the soil. It is safe for the environment. Coir geotextiles mat is made from natural ingredients because it is a waste product from the coconut industry. It can also prevent mold and algae gnats because it contains antifungals which function to inhibit the growth of fungi even in a humid environment.
The most common problem with coir is that it can have a very high salt content, especially for the lower types of coir geotextiles mat. The coir net with high salt content should be washed before use.
Coir geotextiles mat is placed in ex-mining areas or beaches by pegging the sides. Coir geotextiles erosion matting can also be used to cover sloping land such as watersheds (River Flow Area) so that it will minimize landslides and soil abrasion. The ecosystem will be strong and can store water which makes it possible to grow a variety of vegetation on the sidelines of the coir geotextiles mats. Some studies say this coir geotextiles mat can last up to 4 years before breaking down with the soil.
The advantages of coir geotextiles mat compared to geotextiles and synthetic materials such as:
- Material is high-quality natural coconut fiber
- Strong fiber material, able to last a long time but biodegradable
- Able to hold water
- Cocomesh can last about 4 years or more
- Can also be used as a soil fertilizer
- This Cocomesh does not cause any harmful residue
- Repairing areas of soil where moisture has been lost due to certain activities
- Cocomesh is very suitable for use on sloping or rocky areas or land, because of its elastic material characteristics
- Has mildew resistance
- Easy to clean
